THE NORTHERN Cape SAPS Provincial Flash unit, which deals with second-hand goods, held a joint awareness campaign in partnership with Transnet, Eskom, Telkom, Petra Mining, Customs, Isidingo Security, Kimberley Flash and Corporate Communication to raise awareness about the vandalism of essential infrastructure and theft of copper cables and the selling and buying of stolen goods.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana stated that the focus of the awareness campaign was to sensitise communities to refrain from selling stolen goods, including copper cables, to second-hand goods dealers, such as scrap metal dealers.

“Theft and damage of essential infrastructure continues to cripple the economy of the country.”

He said more than 500 information awareness pamphlets were distributed on February 22, while fines were issued to motorists who were driving without valid licence discs.

“A compliance inspection was conducted at a local scrap dealer as well as vehicles that were delivering scrap metals at scrap metal dealers’ premises.”
