THE DEPUTY Minister of Social Development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will meet with sex workers in Kimberley on Wednesday as part of a three-day outreach programme that is taking place from September 26-28 to improve the delivery of social services in “remote areas”.

Department of Social Development spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said the minister conducted a “know your status campaign” with local faith-based non-profit organisations (NPOs) at the Horseshoe Motel on Monday, to remind them about the importance of compliance with the NPO Act.

“She will assist non-compliant NPOs to remain registered with the Department of Social Development so that they can receive assistance, in order for them to render essential services to poor communities,” said Oliphant.

She added that Bogopane-Zulu would hand over the Kutlwano Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre in partnership with Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) and the CIPLA Foundation, in Greenpoint on Tuesday.

“Kutlwano Early Childhood Development centre was originally housed in a corrugated iron shack. Through the partnership with Bogopane-Zulu, Acsa, in collaboration with CIPLA Foundation, a new state-of-the-art structure was built at a total cost of over R4 million.”

Oliphant stated that as part of building momentum for the decriminalisation of sex workers in South Africa, Bogopane-Zulu would conduct a sex workers dialogue on Wednesday.

“She will interact directly with the sex workers to hear their issues, hardships and experiences in Kimberley and remote areas.”
