DA MPL Harold McGluwa believed that justice had been finally served, three years after the brutal murders were committed.

The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the guilty verdict handed down in the Northern Cape High Court on Tuesday to the five men accused of murdering Danielskuil DA councillor, Johannes Baatjies and his friend Jeffrey Shuping Nouse.

DA MPL Harold McGluwa believed that justice had been finally served, three years after the brutal murders were committed.

“The murder of Baatjies and Nouse has left a vacuum in the lives of their families. Baatjies’ death has unsettled the community of Danielskuil. The community was robbed of good governance and a corruption-free councillor. His murder has also unnerved fellow councillors serving on the Kgatelopele Council. The murder of a councillor, especially when it has political undertones, is in fact a threat to our very democracy.”

He added that while no prison sentence would ever bring Baatjies back, the DA would urge for his killers to be given the maximum sentence.

“They have proven themselves to be criminals without a conscience and should be permanently removed from society so that they are prevented from inflicting more pain. We further trust that history will judge those who escaped adjudication this time around.”
