THE COMMANDER of the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, Lieutenant-Colonel Harriet McKenzie, and her members addressed a group of students at Sol Plaatje University on Saturday to raise awareness about gender-based violence.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said the event was part of Sol Plaatje University’s first-year orientation programme.

“A total of 200 first-year students were addressed in four hour-long sessions to accommodate the huge group. Sergeant Morris spoke about gender-based violence and substance abuse,” said Gamieldien.

“He also addressed students on how studying away from home can make them vulnerable and easy targets of social ills.”
