THE KURUMAN Regional Court found 32-year-old Keorapetse Kgaje guilty of armed robbery and sentenced him to 28 years imprisonment.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane, on the afternoon of February 17, 2022, a shop owner in Wyk 10, Kuruman, was confronted by four men posing as customers.

They pointed a firearm at the shop owner and robbed him of money, cellphones and cigarettes. They then took him to his bedroom to search for more money.

Fortunately, the victim managed to call for help from his neighbours, who responded and assisted him.

Three of the suspects fled the scene with money and stolen items from the shop. The police were alerted and the accused was subsequently arrested.

Pilane said that Sergeant Eunice Ngono and Constable Mpumelelo Maruping of the Northern Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes unit “tirelessly investigated the matter and ensured that the accused was brought to book”.

Kgaje was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, 10 years for illegal possession of a firearm and six years for illegal possession of ammunition. He was also declared unfit to own a firearm. The sentences will be served concurrently.
