A 28-YEAR-old Northern Cape man, Pogisho Moagi, was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 58-year-old woman.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said Moagi was convicted for stabbing the woman with a pair of scissors.

“During court proceedings, it emerged that the accused went to the house of the victim on November 5, 2021, demanding to see her daughter, who was his girlfriend at that time. The incident took place at approximately 7pm in Manyeding village near Mothibistad. An argument broke out between the accused and the victim after she refused to let him see her daughter. The accused took out a pair of scissors and stabbed the victim multiple times in the upper body. The victim was left permanently paralysed after the incident,” said Tawana.

He added that Moagi was convicted and sentenced on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

“The accused was found guilty as charged. The investigating officer, Sergeant Thabo Phiri, was commended for the excellent investigation into the matter and for the synergy he displayed when working with the National Prosecuting Authority and the Department of Justice. This sentence will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators who commit gender-based violence,” Tawana concluded.
