A 56-YEAR-old official at the Northern Cape Department of Education, John Jim Crew, from Concordia, was denied bail by the Springbok Magistrate’s Court after he was charged with the rape of a nine-year-old girl.

Provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the alleged incident was reported by the child’s mother.

“It is alleged that on May 6, 2022, the accused raped the minor and the incident was reported to the police by the mother. Through diligent and progressive work done by the investigating officer, the accused was arrested on May 11, 2022 and was remanded in custody until the commencement of his bail hearing,” Senokoatsane said on Friday.

“During his protracted bail application, the accused fired his legal representative and had to appoint a new legal counsel to handle his matter. The prosecution opposed the bail application, considering the seriousness of the charge against the accused.

“The accused will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance on August 4, 2022, while the investigation continues,” concluded Senokoatsane.
