THREE municipal employees were arrested this week after workers were found in possession of cables that were stolen from the Galeshewe sub-station in Phutanang.

Galeshewe residents said they were suffering with constant electricity interruptions during the winter months while their appliances were being damaged by power cuts and surges.

Large areas of Galeshewe were left without electricity this week due to cable faults at the HA Morris and Witdam sub-stations.

A fuse between Soul City and Club 2000 burnt while heavy rains prevented electricians from restoring the power.

Parts need to be ordered due to an act of vandalism at the Herlear sub-station where delays can be expected as repairs need to be outsourced.

Spokesperson for Sol Plaatje Municipality, Thoko Riet, said that the municipal workers were found with 11 kilograms of stolen cable at a local scrapyard on Wednesday.

“The suspects intended to sell the cables that are the property of the municipality when they were caught by the police. At this stage we cannot put a monetary value on it yet. A case of theft has been opened against them. We condemn the actions by these officials.”

She added that disciplinary action would be taken against the employees.

“We will allow the full might of the law to take its course and the necessary internal disciplinary actions will be taken against them.”
