The Postmasburg-based team have not had a day off since winning the Northern Cape leg of the ABC Motsepe regional league two months ago.
HUNGRY Lions FC, the newly-promoted champions from the ABC Motsepe League in the Northern Cape will play their first fixture in the Glad Africa semi professional football league at home in Kathu tomorrow.
Hungry Lions will play against Uthongathi FC from Kwa-Mashu, KwaZulu-Natal at the Sivos Training Centre stadium in Kathu at 3pm.
The Postmasburg-based team have not had a day off since winning the Northern Cape leg of the ABC Motsepe regional league two months ago.
As regional champions they had moved on to win the national play-offs of that league which catapulted them into the National First Division (NFD) who administer the corporate-sponsored Glad Africa League.
Team manager and coach Henry Bassie almost immediately started with training his squad in anticipation of their matches in the higher, national league.
At the same time the team had taken to social media and established a Facebook page through which it gives regular updates on the squad’s activities.
The team also snared a dealership in Kuruman who awarded them a light delivery vehicle for their exclusive use.
In an earlier interview Basie had expressed his excitement about joining the elite league, albeit a beat away from the coveted Premier Soccer League (PSL). In anticipation the team had also made a number of low key signings to the squad.
They will, however, be playing without the services of the ever-reliable former Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder Moses Spandeel. The latter professional football player has retired from club football. Spandeel had helped his homeside do well in the regional league after retiring from Celtics. Last year he again expressed his desire to now retire from the then amateur side, regardless of where they were headed.
Basie had earlier credited Spandeel for having been part of the team’s overall success in the junior ranks. The squad had also taken part in a number of off season practice matches at home.
