Griquas are not to be underestimated as the team had shown amazing guts to beat the more fancied WP side at the Cape Town Stadium in July.

WESTERN Province can all but secure a place in the Currie Cup semi-final in Kimberley on Sunday when they face the Tafel Lager Griquas at 1.30pm.

A 35-13 win over the Lions on Wednesday thanks to two tries from Man of the Match Evan Roos, saw coach John Dobson’s men climb to third on the tournament log.

And with only two rounds to go, Province can put one foot in the door of the top four if they beat their hosts at Tafel Lager Park on the weekend.

Griquas are not to be underestimated as the team had shown amazing guts and determination to beat the more fancied and stronger WP side 30-28 in a historical fourth round Carling Currie Cup fixture at the Cape Town Stadium in July.

But WP captain Ernst van Rhyn believes they have hit their stride at the right time.

He says: “Mentally we made a switch [after the 40-40 draw with the Pumas last Sunday].

“Hopefully we built some momentum going into the last two and hopefully more games.

“Obviously Sunday in Kimberley – it’s not easy, they have a really good squad they’ve built over the last few years. The Sharks in Durban after that is always a tough one.

“Hopefully we can take what we did [against the Lions], learn from the mistakes and take it into those two games.”

In the weekend’s other Currie Cup matches, the Pumas host the Cheetahs at 11.45am, while the Lions entertain the Sharks at 2.10pm.
