WEDNESDAY’S rain in Kimberley appeared to have put a damper on voting, with just over 80 000 of the 131 454 registered voters in the Diamond City going to the polls.

Of the 82 093 votes cast in the city, the ANC secured 44 767 (55.13%), while 22 563 (27.75%) voters placed their cross next to the DA.

The EFF obtained 7 593 votes, securing itself 9.35% of the voting pie in the city, while the Freedom Front Plus obtained 1 972 votes (2.43%). The Good party was the only other party to secure more than 1% of the votes in the Sol Plaatje Municipality, with 1039 votes (1.28%).

The lowest scoring party in the city was the African Content Movement with 12 votes, followed by the International Revelation Congress with 13 votes.

Despite securing a clear majority, the ANC’s support in the Sol Plaatje Municipality dropped from 61.31% in 2014 (55.13% – 2019), while the DA’s support also dropped slightly from 29.25% (27.75% – 2019). The EFF’s support, however, doubled from 4.76% (9.35% – 2019) in the last elections, while the FF Plus’ support also grew from 0.75% in 2014 (2.43% – 2019).

There were a total of 906 spoilt votes in the city.

In most municipalities in the Province it was a two-horse race, with the ANC emerging as the victor, followed in most instances by the DA.

While it scored the most votes throughout the Northern Cape, the ANC dropped to below 50% in several municipalities in the Province, including Gamagara (45.96%), Richtersveld (49.75%), Nama Khoi (46.86%), Hantam (49.06%), Karoo Hoogland (46.03%) and Kgatelopele (47.37%).

The ANC scored the highest percentage of votes in Renosterberg with 68.13%, followed by Ga-Segonyana with 63.9%. In Phokwane, it obtained 62.57% of the votes

The DA failed to secure more than 50% of the votes in any of the municipalities, achieving most of its support in the Nama Khoi Municipality, where it received 43.35% of the votes, and Karoo Hoogland, where it obtained 41.34%. The next highest percentage of votes for the blue party was the Richtersveld with 38.98%.

The EFF did well in Ga-Segonyana (21.94% of the votes), Dikgatlong (24%) and Magareng (17.14%), beating the DA in all three of these municipalities.

Although it didn’t beat the DA in Kgatelopele, it netted 10.56% of the votes here, while in Phokwane it obtained 13.98%, just slipping behind the DA’s 15.68%. In the Gamagara Municipality, the EFF obtained 11.95% of the votes.

Patricia de Lille’s newcomer, the Good party, only really featured in one municipality in the Province, namely Nama Khoi, where it obtained the third highest number of votes, achieving 2.16%. In Kai!Garib it obtained 2.18% of the votes.

In a surprise move, the FF Plus, proved itself to be a contender in the race among the smaller parties. Its biggest support base was in Thembelihle, with 9.04% of the votes, and Karoo Hoogland, where it scored just under 6% of the votes.

Cope failed to feature at all, except in !Kheis where it garnered its biggest support with 9.13% of the votes and Khai-Ma where it obtained 2.71% of the votes. In both these municipalities it entrenched itself as the third largest party in the area, behind the ANC and DA.
