CHERISE Smith, Ficksburg’s only female boxing hope, returns to the square ring in a rematch with her nemesis from the mother city Simamkele Thuseni in a junior lightweight bout set for later this month in Upington.

This grudge fight is promoted by boxing entrepreneur Sinazo Moroke through Moroke Boxing Promotions. Smith had an unfortunate run-in with Thuseni when they last met in June this year at Kimberley’s Flamingo Casino under boxing’s elder statesman Russell Bindeman’s Fight Arts Promotions.

In that encounter Thuseni scuppered Smith’s chances of rising in the ranks by scoring a TKO against the Free Stater. This return match could not have come any sooner for Smith.

Archie Jack, former boxer and South African National Boxing Organisation executive member said: “Cherise’s bout is a return match. Now her rematch is going to be very interesting as the main bout is over six rounds in this women’s month.”

Both Smith and Thuseni were not heard of since their bout in Kimberley. An insider in the boxing fraternity said this was due to the lack of a sufficient number of licensed female challengers in almost all divisions of the fight game and, to a lesser extent, the unavailability of promoters with backup from corporate sponsors.

In the undercard of this bill Musa Ntlangula, who hails from Kimberley fight stables and who made his debut in June in Binedeman’s undercard at the casino last June, will feature in a junior featherweight four rounder against Tshepo Mokgele from Bloemfontein.

Ntlangula will be better motivated this time around as he has to overcome last June’s loss on debut against his opponent then Tshepo Zwane of Johannesburg.

In the men’s junior flyweight division Kimberlite Joseph Magugwane will make his four rounds debut against journeyman Andile Mfeka of Welkom.

The rest of the bill looks as follows:

Date: August 27

Venue: Upington – Progress Hall

Weigh-in: August 26
