JOHN Comitis, chairman of Cape Town City recently made a pretty bold statement while speaking about Emile Witbooi’s recent trial at English Premier League club Chelsea.

Comitis said that it was the Cape Town club that paved the way for the Kimberley-born maestro through its development structures.

The chairman further said he found it exciting that the club’s academy seems to be on the right track. He said that he believes they have made it “the best place” for young talent in the country.

The 16-year-old attacking midfielder was in the UK in early November for a four-week-long assessment with Chelsea. During his stay, he had hopes of impressing talent scouts and earning a contract.

And with Emile’s exceptional skills that is not a pipe dream. In fact, former Chelsea FC youth player Masilo Modubi has backed the young player to succeed during his trial in the UK.

And Modubi is speaking from experience because he also went through a similar situation at Chelsea in 2003, securing himself a contract. Later he was loaned out to Westerlo in Belgium, where he made a name for himself.

However, Modubi made it clear that regardless of the outcome of his trials at the club, Emile will come out polished and refined from the whole experience.

As for Comitis’s comments about the teen sensation who has only been with the Citizens for less than a year, having transferred from the School of Excellence, saying that the club has paved the path for Emile through its structures … some may take exception to his comments.

After all, it’s a matter of record that Emile’s football journey was boosted by many positive influences. Chief among them was when he first started being coached by the well-known coach and talent scout Rre Kagiso Matile – popularly known as ‘Spakes’ aka Spondosie.

Had the groundwork and the nurturing not started here, then Cape Town City would not have had a player of Emile’s calibre to develop.

It is well known that Coach Spakes spotted Emile’s God-given talent when the boy was just five years old. He took Emile under his wing at Spakes Development Centre and nurtured him until he was nine.

There’s so much more to be said about how Emile’s journey unfolded from the time he joined Tswharagano All Stars Football Club till today when he is receiving attention from major English Premier League clubs at just 16 years old.

However, no matter who wants to take credit for what Emile Witbooi has achieved, let’s all agree that the young man needs all the goodwill, positive thoughts, uplifting energy and prayers of those who have their eyes on his blossoming career.

As always, we wish him the best of everything.
