The Kay Motsepe Under-13 Boys and Girls League continues with the provincial play-offs happening in Kimberley, and Vaal Oranje Primary School, from Douglas will be out there strutting their stuff on the field of play on Friday, September 6.
A few short weeks ago, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, Hopetown in Thembelihle became the battleground for young athletes as schools across the Pixley Ka Seme District converged for the highly-anticipated Kay Motsepe Under-13 Boys and Girls League District play-offs.
Vaal Oranje Primary School, from Douglas, emerged as the standout performer in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions under the guidance of their dedicated coaching team. Head coach Ernest Smit, along with assistant coach and team manager Lincoln Grootboom, led their teams to remarkable victories, securing spots in the upcoming provincial play-offs.
The Vaal Oranje Primary (VOP) boys demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the play-offs. They kicked off their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory against RD Williams in their first game. The second game saw a goalless draw, but with four points secured, VOP Boys progressed to the finals.
In the final match against Kareeville Primary, the stakes were high, and one could sense the tension. The game was a thriller, ending in a 2-2 draw, leading to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
VOP Boys held their nerve, clinching a 4-3 victory on penalties and securing their place in the provincial play-offs, set to take place in Kimberley this weekend.
Meanwhile, the VOP girls mirrored the boys’ success with their own impressive performance. They began their journey with a 1-1 draw against Willie Theron and followed it up with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Eureka Primary, which propelled them into the finals with four points.
The final game against Oranje Diamant Primary was a tightly contested affair, ending in a 0-0 stalemate. Like their male counterparts, the VOP girls faced the pressure of penalties. Rising to the occasion, they emerged victorious with a 4-3 win, earning their place in the provincial play-offs.
The victories of both VOP teams are a testament to their hard work, determination, and the exceptional guidance of their coaching staff.
As they prepare for the provincial play-offs in Kimberley this on Friday, with the games being hosted at the Boys’ High sports fields, the entire Vaal Oranje Primary School community stands behind them, eagerly anticipating further success on the provincial stage.
