Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is gearing up to host the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Rugby Sevens Tournament for the third year in a row, solidifying its reputation as a premier venue for university rugby.

SPU has continued to make strides in rugby, with its men’s 15-a-side team securing a spot in the prestigious 2025 Varsity Shield. This achievement underscores the growth of rugby at SPU and adds to the excitement of hosting the USSA Rugby Sevens Tournament.

The two-day USSA Rugby Sevens Tournament, packed with thrilling rugby action, will bring together teams from universities across the country.

The tournament kicked off on Friday, September 20, with a registration session and an opening ceremony that will set the tone for a weekend of intense competition.

The games will take place at SPU’s state-of-the-art sports precinct, which includes the impressive Suzuki Stadium, ensuring top-tier facilities for players and fans alike.

On Saturday, September 21, the competition will shift into full gear, with back-to-back games leading up to the finals scheduled for Sunday, September 22. Here are the opening day’s fixtures for SPU’s male and female teams:

Astro 2 (9.20am): SPU vs University of Mpumalanga

Astro 1 (1.20pm): SPU vs Vaal University of Technology

Astro 1 (3.55pm): SPU vs ETA College

Astro 1 (9.45am): SPU vs Vaal University of Technology

Astro 1 (12.55pm): SPU vs Varsity College
