THE SOL Plaatje University (SPU) is currently hosting a prestigious soccer tournament, the National USSA Football Championships.
And on Wednesday, December 4, at 11am, the hosts took on the University of Johannesburg at the Kimberley Boys’ High A field in a match that would decide who ends top of the group.
The tournament kicked off on Monday, December 2, and will run until this Friday, December 6, 2024. A total of 22 universities from around the country have sent the cream of their football talent to the Diamond City to compete in the Beautiful Game of football.
The tournament itself is in its 11th year of existence, having been around since 2013. It began as part of the expansion of the Varsity Sports South Africa initiative, which initially started with the Varsity Cup rugby tournament in 2008.
The idea was to include other sports, and football was added to promote inter-university competition and develop student athletes.
This year the games are taking place at Kimberley Boys’ High School, the SPU South Campus Sport Precinct, SPU’s Central Campus, Suzuki Stadium and Keeley Park between 9am and 6pm daily.
Tournament updates can be found on the Sol Plaatje University’s website, and the USSA Tournaments App.
