THERE was an atmosphere of celebration and anticipation when Universal RFC, a venerable institution in South African rugby, unveiled their latest kit and announced a significant sponsorship agreement at a ceremony hosted at the AR Abass Stadium last Saturday.

Thanks to Cyril Kruger, the owner of CPAC Pumps and Valves in Kimberley, 2024 marks a pivotal moment for the club, as the business has generously stepped in as the primary sponsor for the team. The partnership is poised to provide a substantial boost to the club’s prospects for the upcoming season, underscoring a shared commitment to excellence and success on the field.

Established in 1886, Universal RFC boasts an illustrious 138-year history, standing tall as a beacon of tradition and excellence in the South African rugby fraternity.

Desroy Bok, the club’s treasurer, spoke to the DFA and expressed his enthusiasm about the club’s enduring legacy and its commitment to community development through sports. “We have been showing growth year in and year out, ensuring that we promote the game in our communities,” he declared.

“Our aim is to steer the youth away from illicit activities and foster a culture of teamwork and camaraderie.”

The weekend’s unveiling ceremony not only showcased the club’s new attire but also highlighted the club’s dedication to inclusivity and diversity. Universal RFC prides itself on its diverse player base, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, races, and religions.

Notably, the club proudly announced the establishment of its first women’s rugby team, marking a significant stride towards gender equality in the sport.

Reflecting on past achievements and future aspirations, Bok emphasised the club’s unwavering commitment to success. “We’ve shown that we can be a force to be reckoned with,” he asserted, citing the club’s impressive performance during the previous season.

Amidst celebrations, Universal RFC also acknowledged significant developments within its leadership and player base. The appointment of the club’s chairman to the esteemed position of Chairman of the Griquas Region underscores Universal RFC’s growing influence in South African rugby circles.

Moreover, the influx of new players and the transition of retired players to coaching roles demonstrate the club’s holistic approach to talent management and development.

However, the journey to success is not without its challenges. Universal RFC faces obstacles such as inadequate playing facilities and financial constraints. Nevertheless, the club remains undeterred, securing alternative venues like the Diskobolos sports fields and diligently organising fund-raisers to sustain its operations.

Looking ahead, Universal RFC has set their sights on the 2024 season with optimism and determination. Eager to build on past successes, the club aims to clinch the top spot in the Region League and compete in the prestigious African Gold Cup qualifiers.

To achieve these goals, Universals requires support from organisations aligned with its vision for sports and youth development.

In a heartfelt appeal to potential sponsors, Bok outlined the club’s requirements, ranging from transport assistance to financial support for essential services on match days. In return, Universal RFC promises valuable promotional opportunities and a mutually beneficial partnership that champions community development and brand visibility.

As Universal RFC embarks on another chapter of its storied history, the club remains steadfast in its pursuit of excellence, fueled by a deep-rooted passion for rugby and a steadfast commitment to its community.

In a message to potential supporters and partners Bok echoed the sentiments of the club as they strive to conquer new heights in the world of rugby saying, “Your support would make a significant difference in the lives of our players.”
