Unies finally manage to get former Bok coach to their stadium

As the guest of honour of Universal RFC (Unies), the former Bok coach addressed a sports seminar on Thursday.

FORMER Springbok head coach Pieter de Villiers finally managed to make it to Kimberley for his long overdue appointment with Universal Rugby Football Club.

De Villiers’ visit had been put off due to the covid-19 lockdown, but the former national mentor was at the AR Abass Stadium on Thursday to give support and encouragement to the club celebrating its 135th anniversary.

As the guest of honour of Universal RFC (Unies), the former Bok coach addressed a sports seminar on Thursday.

De Villiers started out on a motivational speaking tour of Kimberley’s Olympic Primary school in Barkly Road, whereafter he was whisked away to a closed session with the Universal RFC club members and an assortment of local sports personalities.

Also on de Villiers plate during his whirlwind stopover in Kimberley was a coaching clinic at the AR Abass Stadium with aspiring amateur players and coaches.

Northern Cape Cricket CEO Eugene Jacobs, also a former rugby player, paid a courtesy call to the former Springbok mentor.

Universals, one of the oldest rugby clubs in South Africa, this year will be celebrating its 135th anniversary with a number of sports related events, one of which was the visit by De Villiers, who also happens to have played for Griquas at scrum half in his heyday.

Unies chairman Romeo Syfers confirmed to the DFA that De Villiers will not escape Kimberley that easily having been booked to provide coaching clinics over two days to get the maximum benefit from his skill and experience.
