RECENTLY, young basketball enthusiasts gathered in their respective regions for the highly-anticipated Northern Cape Basketball Association Under-18 district trials.

Though it was a cold morning last Saturday, this did not keep players from Frances Baard, John Taolo Gaetsewe, and the nearby districts from coming to showcase their skills and compete for a chance to represent their province.

The trials were tough, with passionate players dribbling, shooting, and showing off their skills knowing that all their moves were being observed carefully, and notes taken, evaluating their performance.

The provincial trials are scheduled to take place on June 10 at the SIVOS sports grounds in Kathu where the most promising players from each district will compete for a spot on the Northern Cape team.

The stakes are high. Only 12 boys and girls will be selected to represent their province at the National Under-18 Basketball Championships set to take place in Bloemfontein from July 2-7.

However, the Northern Cape Basketball Association is facing an additional challenge – financial support. The Association is relying on the generosity of donors and sponsors to ensure that the team can participate in the championships, and is reaching out for aid to help make this dream a reality for the talented young athletes.

Meanwhile, to sharpen the skills of players with an eye on the trials, the Basketball Super League kicks off on Saturday, May 20, starting at 10.30am. Fans of the sport have been invited to fill the stands at the Maloof Skate Park basketball courts, to cheer for and encourage their favourite local teams and players.

The matches promise to be intense, showcasing the passion and skill that is making basketball an increasingly beloved sport in and around the City.
