Thrilling season opener for NC Bowls at 2023/24 Pairs Championships

the Northern Cape Bowls community is now buzzing with anticipation as the season unfolds, with this weekend’s Pairs Championships setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling and fiercely competitive season.

The Northern Cape Bowls 2023/24 season got off to a thrilling start over the weekend as bowlers from the four sub-districts battled it out in the Pairs Championships. There was plenty of action on the greens as competitors battled it out to claim the coveted titles.

The men’s pairs final saw Dudley Daniels and Shaun Campher, who had displayed fine form in the Kimberley Sub-District Bowling Association pairs, face off against Marco Geel and Francois van der Walt from Conroy. Despite the Kimberley duo’s efforts, it was Geel and Van der Walt who outclassed their opponents, seizing the title and making a strong statement early in the season.

In the third/fourth place play-off for the men’s pairs, Wouter Blom and Gavin Panderis from Conroy locked horns with Charles-Peter and Etienne Mathewson from Kimberley. In a thrilling conclusion, Blom and Panderis clinched victory by a single shot on the last end, securing the third-place finish in the tightly contested match.

Meanwhile, in the nail-biting Women’s Pairs final, Annelie Mathewson and Odrie du Plessis emerged as the victors after a tension-filled showdown against Geraldine Moodaley and Michelle van Zyl, both hailing from Kimberley. The match reached its climax with a tie at 21-all on the final end, and it was Mathewson and du Plessis who held their nerve, securing the crucial winning shot that propelled them to the championship title.

The losing semi-finalists, Marietjie van den Bergh and Mariaan Botha from Kalahari, faced off against Melandi Lambrechts and Liezel Kock from Conroy in the battle for third place. Lambrechts and Kock claimed victory and secured the bronze in a hard-fought contest.

After such an exciting start, the Northern Cape Bowls community is now buzzing with anticipation as the season unfolds, with this weekend’s Pairs Championships setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling and fiercely competitive season.
