FC Barcelona, the defending champions of the Sol Plaatje Masters Football League’s five-year-old social responsibility competition, the Rehana Moshoeshoe Memorial Tournament (RMMT), are out of the running for this year’s top honours.
Barcelona were knocked out of the running by the upstart Aztec who clobbered them 5-3 on penalties at the Shekinah Christian School grounds in Homevale on Sunday. The sides had played to a goalless draw in regular time in the qualifying rounds.
Barcelona’s elimination leaves the way open for three-time RMMT champion Juventus to launch a possible fourth attempt to capture the title. Juventus won the trophy for three years in succession from 2014 to 2016. Greenpoint’s Young Pirates and Barcelona took turns at the podium one after the other in the two subsequent years.
The social league has proven to be the more popular of the several junior and non-professional football conferences in especially the greater Frances Baard District. It easily attracts more attendances at its matches than some fixtures in the local and regional organised leagues.
This coming weekend the SPMFL organisers will stage the quarter-final stage (last eight) of the competition at four venues around the Sol Plaatje municipal area.
In Ipopeng Real Madrid will host Tigers at 10am while Black Vultures will do battle at the same venue with Juventus at 11.30am. There will also be quarter-final action at the Roodepan grounds at 10am where Batlhaping Legends are supposed to clash with Force Masters.
The follow-up game will feature Diamond Boys against Phutanang area team Masokolara.

The well-aged Galeshewe side Naughty Boys will run out against Phutanang at the Rooistoep gravel pitch while Zulu Sweepers, who have already booked a slot in the last eight section, have a bye this weekend.
