The inaugural Northern Cape youth soccer tournament, which came to an end at the Galeshewe Stadium on Sunday, was by all accounts a huge success; so much so that the sponsoring solar companies have promised to return next season.

De Aar-based Afrikaans medium school Orion High from De Aar won the R100 000 prize-money on offer for the tournament champions.

Namakwaland teams Sparrows and Olympics respectively took home the silver medals (with a R50 000 cheque) and bronze medals (along with R20 000 in prize-money).

In all 200 games in total were played, involving more than 1 000 school-going youngsters.

Sishen Solar Facility and Kathu Solar Park company representative Mark Janick yesterday confirmed that, due to the success, they will once again be sponsoring the event for next year.

Janick said they will also make an effort to involve some of the other solar energy companies that operate in the Northern Cape to come on board with a similar sponsorship deal.

He confirmed that the bill for all expenses during the inaugural youth tournament was close to the R2 million mark.
