NORTHERN Cape National First Division side Hungry Lions were hoping to secure a win over Pretoria University this past weekend, in a bid to climb up the Motsepe Foundation Championship table.

However, the Pretoria students were having none of it, and after their 3-2 win on Sunday, they have, in fact, leapfrogged Hungry Lions and now sit one spot above the NC team in eighth position.

Elsewhere in the league, Milford regained their position at the top of the table following their win over Leruma United and at the bottom of the log, Venda Football Academy managed to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

As things stand, Milford have now accumulated 17 points from eight matches played, while Hungry Lions in ninth spot have nine points.

Milford’s top-dog status is thanks also in part to the fact that two of the other top teams, Durban City and Upington City, suffered defeats in their latest league assignments.

Durban City were handed a 2-1 loss at the hands of Black Leopards at the Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo and subsequently dropped down to second on the log.

The other Northern Cape side in the competition, Upington City, suffered a 2-1 defeat against Orbit College, meaning that they ended Week 8 in third position.

As mentioned earlier, Venda Football Academy recorded their second victory on the trot with their 3-2 result against fifth-placed Casric Stars.

Looking ahead to the coming weekend, Hungry Lions will face off against Highbury at the Nelson Mandela University Stadium in Gqeberha at 3.30pm on Saturday.
