The DHL Stormers are set to bolster their squad ahead of the 2024/25 United Rugby Championship (URC) season, drawing on some exciting talent from Kimberley’s Suzuki Griquas as part of their pre-season preparations.

This move comes as part of a development agreement established between the two sides, allowing a seamless flow of players between the squads to the benefit of both teams.

The agreement, which was announced earlier this year, introduces a loan structure that facilitates player movement while also promoting staff development. Coaches and support staff from both teams are able to collaborate, learning from one another to exchange best practices and enhance their expertise.

Several Stormers players, including Sazi Sandi and Connor Evans, gained valuable playing experience with the Griquas during the South African Cup this year. With the Kimberley-based team having wrapped up their Currie Cup campaign, a number of Griquas players are set to join the Stormers in preparation for the upcoming URC season.

Key players already integrated into the Stormers’ pre-season setup include fullback Connor Mahoney, lock Dylan Sjoblom, and prop Leon Lyons. Additionally, wing Dylan Maart, loose forward Marco de Witt, and prop Cebo Dlamini are expected to link up with the squad soon.

Springbok Sevens star Sako Makata, who also represented Griquas in the Currie Cup, has rejoined the Stormers as part of this cross-team collaboration.

According to @rugby365.com, Stormers Director of Rugby, John Dobson, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its mutual benefits.

“It’s been incredibly valuable for some of our players to gain game time with the Griquas, and now we see the arrangement working in reverse as we ramp up our preparations for the URC. We’ve seen standout performances from the six Griquas players during the Currie Cup, and we’re excited to integrate them into our system,” Dobson said.

Griquas CEO Arni van Rooyen echoed Dobson’s sentiments, emphasising the collaboration as a model for growth and excellence in South African rugby.

“By leveraging each other’s strengths and resources, both teams are building a competitive edge while also contributing to player development. This partnership underscores the value of cooperation in driving success both on and off the field.”

With the URC season just weeks away, the Stormers are gearing up with fresh talent, and this innovative partnership is already delivering promising results for both franchises. Fans can expect to see how this collaboration impacts the upcoming season as both teams continue to nurture South Africa’s rugby talent.
