SOL PLAATJE University’s rugby team is making headlines this season with quite an impressive winning streak. But not only that, their upward trajectory has been bolstered by newfound local sponsorship and a fresh kit.

The team is riding high after four consecutive victories, and unveiled their new sponsors and jerseys at a momentous event held on Tuesday.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Nicole Morris, delivered an address with a resounding show of support for the SPU Rugby Team as they set their sights on qualification for the 2025 Varsity Shield. In her keynote address, she commended the team’s camaraderie, resilience, and shared sense of purpose, crediting these qualities for their success on the field.

Morris expressed gratitude to the sponsors – The Heights, NTLO Enterprises, and Braveheart Distillery – for their commitment to backing the rising brand of SPU Rugby.

Dirk Potgieter, Chairperson of SPU Rugby, echoed Morris’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of the sponsors’ support in advancing the team’s ambitions. He applauded the players for their outstanding performance this season, attributing their success to a focus on “doing little things better”.

Representing one of the sponsors, Christo Snyman of NTLO Enterprises, extended appreciation to Sol Plaatje University for the partnership opportunity. He encouraged the rugby team to wear their colours with honour and pride, symbolising the unity between the university and its sponsors.

Meanwhile, head of SPU Rugby, Ollie Mew, rallied the SPU community to rally behind the team as they strive for qualification in the 2025 Varsity Shield. He spoke passionately about the team’s journey, referencing the university’s mascot, as he spoke about the team heading towards a “special place” fueled by their “Gemmie Fire”.

The unveiling of the new sponsors and kit marks a significant milestone for Sol Plaatje University Rugby, signalling not only their abilities on the field but also the growing support from the local community.

With an unbeaten record and newfound backing, the SPU Rugby Team is poised to make waves in the upcoming season, carrying the hopes and dreams of their university with them as they strive for excellence.
