IN AN authentic Currie Cup thriller at Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley on Friday evening, the Windhoek Draught Griquas pulled off an exciting 25-21 victory over the Fidelity ADT Lions in a high-intensity game of rugby.

The match started with a bang as the Griquas came out all guns blazing, scoring two tries and slotting two conversions within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Jay-Cee Nel and Hanru Sirgel were the try scorers for the Griquas, and their centre pair made good use of the ball, swinging it out wide to their fast and brutal wingers who ran down the sideline with ease. The Lions fought back and tried hard to break through the Griquas’ defence, but it was it was like trying to beat down a stone wall, and they could only manage a try in the 20th minute.

At the end of the first half, the score stood at 19-7 in favour of the Griquas. The Lions looked a shadow of their previous game against the Airlink Pumas and were struggling to keep up with the Griquas’ pace and intensity.

Early in the second half, the Lions rushed over the try line, bringing the score to 19-14 in favour of the Griquas. The Lions held onto most of the possession in the first 15 minutes of the second half and looked like they had renewed drive, scoring another try and putting them in the lead at 19-21.

The game was a seesaw battle, with both teams fighting hard for possession and territory. The crowds were cheering on their teams hoping to give their team renewed energy.

As the game approached the final whistle, it was the Griquas who showed their experience and determination, winning a hard-fought battle against the Lions with a final score of 25-21.

The Griquas’ defence was the standout feature of the game, and their ability to swing the ball out wide to their fast and brutal wingers proved too much for the Lions to handle.

The Lions will need to regroup and come back stronger in their next game, while the Griquas will be delighted with their hard-fought win at home.
