The Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Women’s Football team can’t seem to put a foot wrong. In a landmark achievement for women’s football in the region, the SPU Women have earned promotion to the prestigious Sasol League.

This milestone comes after a stellar performance during a season that saw them clinch the 2024 Frances Baard Regional Women’s League title at a canter.

The promotion, endorsed by the Provincial Competitions Committee, marks a significant step forward for the SPU Women, who have worked tirelessly throughout the season to claim their spot among South Africa’s elite women’s football teams.

The Frances Baard Football Association extended their best wishes to the team as they embark on this new chapter, confident in their potential to excel at the provincial level.

PW Mondela, Regional Secretary of the Frances Baard Football Association, expressed heartfelt congratulations to the team in an official statement saying, “This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and unwavering spirit that each member of the SPU club has exhibited throughout the season.

“Your triumph is a reflection of the incredible talent and determination that defines the Sol Plaatje University Ladies Football Club.”

Mondela also highlighted the inspiration SPU Ladies FC has provided to other women’s clubs, as well as to their fans and supporters, both within the university community and beyond.

Sol Plaatje University Dean of Student Affairs, Nicole Morris, said that the university is extremely proud of this wonderful achievement, which talks directly to their high-performance sport strategy. “We hope that this will encourage the community and our partners to support our women’s football team on and off the field,” she said.
