Sol Plaatje University hosts Sevens tournament

The tournament proper gets under way in midweek after the observance of opening ceremony protocols starting on Tuesday, and will continue to the final play-offs on Sunday.

The Sol Plaatje University will on Tuesday 20 September, kick off a bumper week of rugby as the province’s tertiary institution and Kimberley gear up to host 22 women’s and 24 men’s rugby sevens teams, including a team from Botswana.

The tournament proper gets under way in midweek after the observance of opening ceremony protocols starting on Tuesday, and will continue to the final play-offs on Sunday.

The team from Botswana is composed of members of the Botswana Tertiary Student Sports Association (Botessa).

On Friday last week, University Sports South Africa gave notice of the tournament to media houses. The tournament, dubbed the “University Sports South Africa (USSA) Men’s and Women Sevens Rugby Championship 2022”. Will take place at the university of Sol Plaatje’s south campus field as well as the Windhoek Draught Park.

The university women’s and men’s Sevens games have been divided into two sections. The A section has four pools of three teams each while the B section has two pools of four teams each.

The Sol Plaatje University women’s sevens team has been drawn in the B section where they will come up against North West Province’s Mahikeng Campus team in their first match which will start at the South campus astro turf at 9am on Saturday September 24.

The SPU Women’s sevens team will then take to the field against University of the Western Cape (UWC) later in the day at the Windhoek Draught Park in a match scheduled for 3pm.

The winners of Saturday’s games will face off in the play-offs scheduled for Sunday September 25.

In the men’s section SPU will take on Rhodes University. The two are scheduled to take the astro two field at 9.20am on Saturday, September 24.

An SPU men’s Invitational side is also scheduled to take on Walter Sisulu University at 10am at the Windhoek Draught Park Stadium on Saturday.

In a press release on the SPU website, more details were made available.

“There are seven players on each team, and each half lasts a mere seven minutes, making each match electrifying and fast paced.

“Spectators love the game’s unusual format, and painted faces and wigs and outlandish outfits are the norm at Rugby Sevens matches. Gemmie, the SPU Mascot, is sure to join the fun and keep spirits high.

A dazzling opening ceremony will accompany the championship, as well as a night run.

According to the SPU website, this is what the fans can look forward to:

• SPU Campus Night 5km Race on September 20 at 6pm.

• Opening Ceremony of Teams on September 23 2022 at 5pm.

• Rugby 7s Championships on September 23 and 24 from 9am – 5pm daily.
