Colville United FC won the first game of their ABC Motsepe League season beating De Aar based United Rovers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the AR Abass Stadium in Square Hill Park.

At the half-time mark the teams were even at 1-all. Former Pescodia Porto coach Arlon Wilson appeared alongside other Colville United technical staff members on the bench, among them was head coach Donald Davis. The team itself put on show a total of seven new signings at the weekend.

After the match, the media-savvy Wilson said he was very happy with his team’s win. He did mention that they tried out some new team formations and as soon as the new and old members gelled then they will be ready to conquer the league.

United Rovers manager Fred Oliphant was a downhearted man after the game. He expressed his disappointment at his players for not having played according to their game plan. “They had their chances and they let them go to waste,” he said.

The match itself attracted an unusually large crowd at the Square Hill Park pitch. Among those in the stands was Colville United legends manager who is a giant of the game in his own right; Kitty Wilkinson.

Saturday’s league opener started off on a rather sluggish note probably because of the stiff legs brought on by inaction over the league recess period. The first goal came in the 30th minute when Colville’s Delano Abrams found the net in open play.

The next goal caught the Colville crew by surprise as Rovers centred the ball for the restart, briefly pushed it around to a couple of players before Roberto Baartman blasted the equaliser into the Colville net (1-1).

The second half brought a notch higher activity as the teams sported fresh legs on the park. The strikers were most eager to hit the back of the net evidenced by the frequent forays into each other’s territory. In the 62nd minute, Colville’s Faizel Pieterse netted a cheeky goal to take the game home 2-1 in favour of the hosts.
