"The players helped a lot by putting a shoulder to the wheel to help the team make a success of it.”
Pescodia Porto FC successfully defended their Safa Frances Baard SAB League title against Phokane Stars of Ganspan on Saturday by beating Stars 2-1 at their home base in Jan Kempdorp.
Porto made short shrift of the business at hand by dispensing with their hosts via two quick goals scored in the first half of this second-leg encounter in the league. Porto had walloped the Ganspan team 7-2 in Galeshewe during the first leg.
Porto are top of the log and still have two games to play to wrap up the season, but they have technically won the league on the basis of the fact that they have amassed 69 points over 28 games. The Pescodia team have notched up 22 wins, three draws and have only lost three games.
Their nearest rival at position two on the log is Real Madrid with 59 points, and they have no chance of catching up with Porto even if Porto were to lose their last two games and Madrid go on to win all three of their remaining games.
In Saturday’s game Junior Pienaar and Mxolisi Kwayi scored the first-half winners for Porto while Stars drew back a consolation goal also in the same half.
Coach of the two year-old Porto Arlon Wilson said afterwards: “It was not easy getting here. It’s still a tough road for us ahead. The players helped a lot by putting a shoulder to the wheel to help the team make a success of it.”
Porto’s owner Dougie Forster said he was “over the moon” with the anticipated league title. At Porto’s home base in Roodepan there were all-night celebrations over the weekend because of the win.
Porto had a meteoric rise in Kimberley’s organised football establishment. In their first year in the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association in 2018 they won the Sol Plaatje Easter tournament. The owners then bought out the status of Safa SAB League team Dynamos FC and ran away with the league in that year.
Porto will now advance to the play-offs for the overall championship of the SAB League in the Province. Success in the play-offs will afford them a place in the more senior ABC Motsepe League.
