SANDF go to war in rugby week clashes

The SANDF Rugby week’s third day at Diskobolos army base delivered an action-packed game between Southern Eastern Province (SEC) who beat the Free State XV 17-3 in the tightest and most robust game thus far in the tournament.

SEC were first to draw blood when they went ahead with a converted try early on. Indications that this was going to be a tough encounter came with a nasty collision between two opposing players minutes into the match.

When the dust cleared the SEC player lay slumped on the ground in need of urgent medical attention, and the player was eventually stretchered off the field. Tempers flared up from time to time between the sides forcing the referee to cool down matters. Yet, despite his efforts a player on each side went to the sin bin for separate offences before the half was done.

Meanwhile, SEC edged gradually forward via a penalty then another converted try to take a 17-0 lead. After the break the Free State probed relentlessly to find a gap in the SEC defences, and eventually managed to get on the scoreboard midway through the half via penalty kick which rewarded them with a paltry three points, with no further score registered in the game.

Earlier, in the day’s opening match, the Northern Cape Women got the better of North West blasting them 22-0. The NC seniors, however, were not so fortunate in the follow-up match against Gauteng who beat them 13-10.

In yesterday’s last game Western Province hammered Gauteng 30-10 in another tightly fought match, bringing down the curtain on another thrilling day at the army base.
