Safa Northern Cape have said they are impressed with the interest that Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul has shown in the acquisition of a Premier Soccer League status for the Province and the Association was actively engaged with his office in realising that dream.

This week the Premier reiterated a now familiar view in the National Assembly during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation (SONA) debate that the Northern Cape desires to have a Premier Soccer League affiliated team.

The Northern Cape last had professional football outfits, Dalton Brothers and Leeds United, who respectively played in the defunct National Professional Soccer League and the Federation Professional League in the 1970’s.

Safa Northern Cape first deputy vice-president Doc Mathe yesterday elaborated on his association’s strategic football development document which was released this week.

Mathe (pictured) said they have taken a keen interest in the Premier’s comments regarding attempts to acquire PSL status for the Province. “This is the first time in a long while that we have had a Premier who has expressed interest in football. We really are blessed to have such a Premier,” he said.

Mathe added that Safa have noted as well the comments made by the ruling African National Congress after its Lekgotla (summit) last month regarding the same issue.

He said Safa was aware too that the issue might also be tabled at the present, Northern Cape Government Lekgotla.

“Negotiations about this matter are ongoing between us and the Office of the Premier.

“We have shared our plan as to how to go about the idea. Our plan involves starting with a team currently playing in the ABC Motsepe League ( Safa third Division) and how to take it to the National First Division,” Mathe explained.

“Besides that, our plan has also emphasised the need to strengthen the lower divisions (in the Northern Cape) as a national team will need strong feeder teams from the bottom,” he added.

Mathe also said that this was a very encouraging sign for the Province that needed to be applauded. “Government’s interest in football must be celebrated,” he said.
