The Tafel Lager Griqua outfit will be travelling again this weekend. This time the Kimberley side are off to Loftus Versfeld for a pre-season warm-up friendly against the Blue Bulls tomorrow in a match that will serve as a curtain-raiser to the Vodacom Bulls Super Rugby fixture against the Reds.

Last week Griquas lost narrowly to a second-string Cheetahs outfit, going down 38-33 in their first pre-season warm-up match that was also a curtain-raiser, on that occasion to the Cheetahs vs Osprey Pro14 fixture that was played at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The Griqua team, players and coaching staff, have been hard at work on the training field as well as in the gym working on ironing out the mistakes they made against the Cheetahs last weekend.

Assistant and backline coach, Scott Mathie told the DFA yesterday that they had identified the problems that cost them the result last week.

“The friendly against the Bulls provides the team with an opportunity to iron out the early season errors that were prevalent against the Cheetahs. We have focused on ensuring we have the correct width on defence and on making good decisions when it comes to our defensive breakdowns.

“Discipline must improve and our ability to keep ball in hand too, as these were two areas which put us under a lot of pressure last week.”

Mathie also said that being on the road was good preparation for the rigours of the season ahead, “Traveling to the Bulls will give us a good feel for an away game and prepare us sufficiently for the upcoming away fixtures in the upcoming SuperSport Challenge competition.

“We will, no doubt, use this as an opportunity to grow the spirit within the team, try out combinations and look forward to a proper battle at Loftus.”
