Athletics Griqualand West president and executive member resign.

ATHLETICS Griqualand West (AGW) was rocked on Thursday last week by the sudden resignation of its president Theo Senekal senior and Leon Fouche the executive member responsible for track and field.

Senekal senior the association president and board chairperson along with Fouche resigned “with immediate effect” according to letters sent to the association’s board of directors.

In both their letters of resignation the duo individually state: “It is with mixed emotions that I leave the AGW office which has become near and dear to my heart over the last three years that I have served on the board.

“I feel it is best for me to make room for someone with more time and energy to devote to the challenges of this position. I am thankful for the support and what we have accomplished in the past three years, even during the Covid-19 pandemic which is still part of our daily struggles. I have no doubt the board will continue with these successes in the future.”

AGW deputy president Lorato Banda spoke to the DFA regarding the resignations saying, “I can confirm that the president and one board member have resigned with immediate effect on September 9th.

“Although this came as a surprise, the constitution of AGW makes provision for such eventualities, one of them is that in the absence of the president, the vice-president takes over the roles and responsibilities of the president, meaning there’s no vacuum in leadership,” Banda said.

“Over and above this, there will be a consultative process between AGW and all the clubs affiliated with it to chart the way forward,” he added. “Once this process is completed all stakeholders will be duly informed.”
