DIAMANTVELD High School is rolling out the red carpet for the multitude of sports personalities and teams that will descend on Kimberley for the resumed annual Absa Wildeklawer Sport tournament that kicks off on Friday for high schools.

Diamantveld High is one of three selected sites that will host the various sporting codes of the Wildeklawer tournament. As in previous years, the school will host the bulk of the rugby and netball games.

Newton Primary, also an old hand at hosting the tournament, will host netball and rugby matches on its premises.

Kimberley Boys’ High is the newcomer among the host venues. Boys’ High will host the football matches, which are the latest addition to the tournament’s sporting codes.

Janco Steenkamp, public relations officer at Diamantveld High, said they have not made extensive changes to the school’s existing sports infrastructure in preparation for hosting the rugby and netball matches for the high school section of the tournament.

They have, however, put on a fresh dash of paint around the school terrain. They have also laid on fresh batches of Kikuyu grass on the playing surfaces ahead of the scheduled matches.

Steenkamp said they have installed extra mobile stands for spectators around the field perimeter.

He pointed out that because of the school’s proximity to the Honoured Dead Memorial, they were restricted in the type of infrastructure that they could erect on the school’s premises.

The sports fields around Diamantveld High will be particularly busy from Friday to Sunday this week as the high schools will be in action after the conclusion of the primary schools section on Thursday.

The facilities at Newton Primary were all readied ahead of schedule. They started hosting netball and rugby games for the primary schools as of Monday this week.

On Tuesday they were scheduled to host eight junior rugby matches, which were set to feature some of the most prominent sports schools from around the country.

On Thursday, Newtown Primary will host a raft of development teams.

The tournament proceeds until May 2. Entry to the match venues is free, subject to spectators observing the requisite Covid-19 protocols.
