As Mamelodi Sundowns gear up for a crucial Tshwane Derby against SuperSport United on Wednesday, head coach Miguel Cardoso remains unwavering in his focus on the task at hand.
The 52-year-old Portuguese mentor, who took the reins in December 2024, has successfully steered the club to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, solidifying their status as favourites for yet another league title.
The pressure mounts as Sundowns also prepare for a showdown with the formidable Orlando Pirates this weekend, a fixture that could significantly impact the title race.
“Obviously, you cannot look too much in the front because you never know what will happen in the next game,” Cardoso remarked, reflecting on the importance of concentrating solely on the upcoming derby.
“Today, we had an intention, but we could not follow it through because the game was asking for things, and I needed to do it.”
This strategic mindset is a hallmark of Cardoso’s approach, reinforcing his commitment to the longevity and strength of the squad.

Cardoso’s immediate challenge lies in harnessing his squad’s potential against SuperSport United this Wednesday.
Maintaining competitive edge amid a congested schedule, which includes four matches in nine days, will test the resilience of the Sundowns line-up. Cardoso hopes that striker Peter Shalulile will continue his impressive form following a brilliant performance against Golden Arrows last Sunday.
Shalulile’s early introduction in the previous match proved pivotal, as the Namibian international not only won a penalty shortly after substituting for midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise but also scored two goals in a resounding 4-0 victory.
Cardoso explained his tactical switch, highlighting the need for agility in responding to opponents who unexpectedly altered their strategy.
“First half, quite tricky, a different approach as we expected from our opponent. They changed the structure and closed much more of the spaces,” Cardoso noted.
His adjustments allowed Sundowns to regain momentum leading to an emotional positive moment at halftime, setting the stage for their eventual triumph.
Amidst these challenges, Cardoso has made a compelling case to the Premier Soccer League (PSL). Calling for a potential reform in the league’s scheduling, he expressed concerns over the late start, which hinders South African teams’ preparations for the CAF Champions League.
“We need to focus on many things at the same time … It’s important that next year the championship does not start so late,” he voiced, underscoring the necessity for enhanced planning to support teams competing on international fronts.
With the Tshwane Derby drawing near and the championship title within reach, Sundowns are poised to showcase their resilience and depth.
As the club ventures through this intense fixture period, fans can expect nothing less than thrilling performances from the league leaders who have seemingly found their strides under Cardoso.
The likes of Iqraam Rayners, Lucas Ribeiro and Shalulile are finding each other with regularity and are set to terrorise defences at home as well as throughout the continent.
