Former defender Patrick Mabedi has been appointed as the interim coach of Kaizer Chiefs for the rest of the season after Steve Komphela resigned in the wake of the 2-0 Nedbank Cup semi-final defeat to Free State Stars on Saturday night.

Mabedi, who hails from Malawi, was the assistant coach to Komphela and will take charge for the three remaining Premier Soccer League games against Golden Arrows on Tuesday, Maritzburg United on April 28 and Ajax Cape Town on May 12.

Chiefs added in a statement on Monday that former winger Arthur “10111” Zwane will be Mabedi’s assistant coach. Zwane is the current boss of the Chiefs reserve team.

Mabedi joined Chiefs in 1998 as a central defender, and captained the side to two consecutive league titles in 2004 and 2005.

The 44-year-old Mabedi returned to Naturena as Komphela’s assistant coach after being the head coach at NFD side Cape Town All Stars.

“In the meantime, the search is on to find a new coach for next season,” Chiefs said in a statement, with speculation reaching fever pitch that current Free State Stars mentor Luc Eymael will take over from Komphela at the Amakhosi next season.
