Orion’s teamwork secures them another Copa Coca-Cola title

Consistency pays off for high school team

CHAMPIONS: Orion High School from De Aar hold up the Copa Coca-Cola Under-15 cup which they successfully defended at the AR Abass stadium during the provincial finals on Saturday. Their coach Lionel Kok is at back, far right.

An uphill battle was expected when the defending champions of the Northern Cape provincial Copa Coca-Cola Under-15 football tournament, Orion High School from De Aar, descended on Kimberley’s AR Abass Stadium along with pretenders to their crown for Saturday’s competition.

In the end, however, Orion held their nerve and held on to their trophy, getting the better of the other four competitors – Kimberley’s Technical High School, Concordia High, Carlton van Heerden High from Upington and Gamohama Intermediate school from Mothibistad.

The defending champions were oozing with confidence ahead of the finals and secure in the knowledge that they would successfully defend their hard-earned title.

Orion High’s manager Christy Mathews said before Saturday’s tournament that they were in a comfortable position because of their consistency, seeing as they have been playing together for more than three years; and this showed on Saturday, when they lifted the trophy again.
