Northern Cape SAPS team runs rampant at national tournament

The team overpowered all their opponents in the round robin stages and won all four of their matches

Four members of the Northern Cape SAPS soccer team have received call-ups to the national security cluster squad after the Province won the police national football championship which was held in Welkom last week.

SAPS coach Tshepiso Motseothata said: “during the championships our team displayed quality football and a high level of discipline on the pitch. We played and won five matches, and drew one.”

The team overpowered all their opponents in the round robin stages and won all four of their matches by an average two goals and proceeded to the semi-finals where they beat their Eastern Cape counterparts 2-1.

A breeze

The final of the tournament was a breeze for the local SAPS side as they waltzed past hosts Free State 2-1 to take the trophy. Following on the team’s impressive showing at the tournament four of its members, constables Lebogang Kgosiemang, Obenne Rattle and Mxolisi Segede (best striker of the tournament), along with sergeant Mongezi Zwane (best defender), were called up to the national squad.

The team meanwhile also picked up the title of “Most Improved Team of the Year”, and their beaming coach was named “Coach of the Tournament”.

Northern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Peter Shivuri commended the team for bringing the SAPS championship Trophy to the Province.
