After booking their ticket to next year’s World Cup in France on Tuesday, the Nigerian women’s team will be looking to defend their title in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (Awcon) final against South Africa on Saturday, according to coach Thomas Dennerby.

The Super Falcons beat Cameroon to reach the final and the win guarantees a place at the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The two finalists and the winners of the third-place play-off between Mali and Cameroon tomorrow will also punch their ticket to the World Cup.

“For now we celebrate and prepare for the final on Saturday. We are happy that we have won the game and picked one of the three tickets to the Fifa Women’s World Cup. Now that we have that out of the way, the next target is retaining the trophy,” said Dennerby.

“It was a game we expected to be difficult and it proved to be nothing short of that. I feel the fans loved every bit of it despite it going 120 minutes without a goal.”

Despite the lottery of a penalty shoot-out to determine the winners, Dennerby said his side had done their best to take chance out of the equation.

“Both teams played well and sold a good game out to Africa and the rest of the world. The penalty shoot-out was one that we have been practising at training for some time now and today the players executed it to perfection.”
