THE COCA-COLA Khaya Majola Cricket Week being held in Johannesburg continued into its third day yesterday, with the Northern Cape Cricket team playing two 20/20 fixtures.

NCC faced neighbours Free State at the St Stithians Main Oval; and in the afternoon they moved to St Stithians Baytop Oval to take on Boland.

Free State won the toss and elected to bat first in the morning encounter. They scored a useful 159/5 in their 20 overs at a rate of 7.95 runs per over. The best of their batsmen were Garnett Tarr (58) and CP Klijhans (47), while the pick of the NCC bowlers was Mason Zacharea with his 2/37.

NCC’s run chase ended with a dreary 105 all out, the team only managing a mediocre rate of 5.25. Nonetheless, Andrew Louw followed up on his 45 on the previous day with a solid 32 in this match, while Conor McNamara and Mkhuseli Mayekiso each contributed 19 runs.

The pick of the Free State bowlers were Tshediso Kheswa 2/10, Thandekile Plank 2/16 and Donald Machalotsa 2/4, who helped Free State to the massive 54 run victory.

In the afternoon NCC were up against a confident Boland team that had beaten Limpopo by 2 wickets in their morning clash.

The Bolanders elected to bat first and set a very good 167/4 in their 20 overs. The two opening batsmen put on a partnership of 82 runs for the first wicket, Daniel du Plessis scoring 49, while the No 2 batsman Vezokhule Mntungwa smashed his way to 59 not out, after also being involved in another 65-run partnership with Samuel Henderson (46).

The pick of the NCC bowlers was Barend Engelbrecht who picked up 2/22.

As it turned out, the target set by Boland was too steep for Northern Cape who crashed to a 74-run defeat, after they were skittled out for 93.

The top scorers were Mkhuseli Mayekiso 34 and Barend Engelbrecht who contributed 28. The best of the Boland bowlers were Gareth Wolmarans taking 3/18, Achille Cloete 2/6, Kieran Dreyden 2/8 and Andries Janse van Rensburg 2/9.
