NC women give good account of themselves despite loss

PLAYING WITH HEART: The Northern Cape SAPS Womens team gave a good account of themselves against a powerful and experienced Western Cape team. In the end Western Cape won the encounter 15-5.

The third day of the SAPS National Rugby Week saw only four matches being contested, with all games taking place on Tafel Lager Park’s B Field yesterday. The two women’s matches were the last in the round robin section, while the men got their play-off rounds under way.

The NC Women took on the more fancied Western Cape team in the second fixture of the day, this after the team from the Eastern Cape had hammered Free State 52-0 in the earlier match. The Northern Cape team gave a good account of themselves throughout the match, even holding their opponents to 5-5 at the halftime break with one try apiece. The Western Cape team had to dig deep, but eventually won the match 15-5, adding two unconverted tries in the second half. Both teams enjoyed some good support from their male counterparts, who were egging the women’s teams on, singing and cheering with gusto.

Although NC lost the match, they did not give up and played with guts and big heart right to the final whistle, fending off some strong attacks from their Western Cape opposition.
