TWO PROMINENT sport administrators from the Northern Cape, have been selected to represent South Africa at the 2021 Summer World University Games.

This prestigious sporting event, which was postponed in 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, is set to take place in the vibrant city of Chengdu, China, from July 28 to August 8 this year. The Games were planned to continue to be branded as Chengdu 2021, despite it being postponed twice.

The two sports administrators, Thabiso Letselebe and Thabo Moilwa were named as part of Team South Africa when Ms. Nomsa Mahlangu, president of University Sport South Africa (USSA) named the team last month.

Letselebe and Moilwa were named among the elite group of individuals chosen to represent their country on the global stage as part of the Management team of Team SA.

Letselebe will assume the role of Media and Communications Manager, overseeing the team’s communications protocols and ensuring the nation is kept informed about the team’s performance against 128 participating countries, while Moilwa, on the other hand, will lead the entire team as the Head of Delegation, guiding them throughout the competition.

Letselebe, a 30-year-old mathematics and science educator hailing from Kimberley, holds a Bachelor of Education degree from Nelson Mandela University. He is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree at the University of the Western Cape.

His passion for sports administration is evident through his active involvement as the vice-president of USSA and his role on the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sport Association (CUCSA) Media and Communication Committee and the International University Sport Federation (FISU) Communication Committee.

The 27-year-old Moilwa, meanwhile, was born in the small town of Ganalagte in the North-West province. He is no stranger to the world of education and sports.

Holding a Bachelor of Education degree from Sol Plaatje University, he too is pursuing a postgraduate degree at his alma mater.

Moilwa’s dedication and leadership skills have earned him a place on the executive committee of university sports, where he serves as an additional member. Furthermore, Moilwa is a valuable member of the senior management team at Kimberley Boys’ High School, serving as the Deputy Headmaster for Corporate Services.

So while Letselebe and Moilwa prepare to support Team SA with their expertise, excitement is building as the team prepares to participate in 12 sporting codes at the Games.

The diverse range of disciplines includes Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Diving, Gymnastics, Rowing, Tennis, Water Polo, Basketball, Fencing, Swimming, and Judo.

The South African team contingent, consisting of both athletes and support staff, will comprise a total of 201 individuals. Notably, this will be the most gender-balanced team ever sent by South Africa, with a makeup of 103 male athletes and 97 female athletes, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to inclusivity and gender equality.

Letselebe and Moilwa, now serving as ambassadors for their country, will proudly represent the Northern Cape province as they take on the world’’s best university athletes in Chengdu.

This remarkable journey would not have been possible without their unwavering dedication and the support of the Northern Cape community. They follow in the footsteps of Mr. Tshepo Mosoue, Sport Officer at Sol Plaatje University, who served as the table tennis team manager at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei.

As the countdown to the FISU Summer World University Games begins, Letselebe, Moilwa, and their South African teammates are preparing rigorously, both physically and mentally, to ensure they achieve their personal bests on the international stage.

The nation eagerly anticipates the results of their hard work and wishes them the best of luck as they embark on this extraordinary sporting adventure.
