THE NORTHERN Cape boys hockey team is facing headwinds at the Under-13 Inter Provincial Tournament (IPT) which kicked off in Stellenbosch on Sunday.

The Northern Cape boys team came second best against a spirited Southern Free State A side who walloped them 3-1 in the first game. Kade Lottering brought some respectability to the scoreline when he shot the Northern Cape side’s only goal via a penalty.

Matters got worse for the Northern Cape juniors when they faced Limpopo who mercilessly trounced them 5-1. The lone, face-saving goal was provided by Kabelo Maruping.

In the girls section, matters were far worse for the Northern Cape team. They were wiped out 12-0 by the Northern Blues team. Of course, the score could not have been otherwise considering that the competition is under the capable stewardship of former Proteas women’s captain Nicolene Tereblanche.

In their second match at the tournament in Stellenbosch, Northern Cape lost 4-0.

The three-day tournament continues in Stellenbosch.
