After some wonderful matches between the best of the Northern Cape the mother and son duo of René and Driaan van Niekerk respectively won their ladies and men’s titles.
THE MOTHER and son bowls playing duo of René and Driaan van Niekerk respectively won the Women’s and Men’s Northern Cape 2022 Singles Championship over the weekend in Kimberley.
Jacques Swanepoel, membership and marketing coordinator for Magareng Bowls Club and rapporteur on the championship, said the Northern Cape provincial bowls conference hosted their 2022 Singles Championship which attracted the top 16 men and top 16 female contestants from all four districts to compete for the championship.
For her medal challenge René van Niekerk competed in the Women’s singles championship which was held at the Sol Plaatje West End Bowls club on Saturday and Sunday. Driaan launched his attack on the Men’s championship at the Beaconsfield Park Bowls club.
“After some wonderful matches between the best of the Northern Cape the mother and son duo of René and Driaan van Niekerk respectively won their ladies and men’s titles, adding this to their sub district title,” said Swanepoel.
Swanepoel said this coming weekend (February 19-20b) Driaan will be hoping to defend his Under-30 Masters title when the top 12 Under-30 players take part in the Northern Cape Bowls championship for his category.
The host club for the upcoming event is still to be confirmed but it will definitely be held in Kimberley this weekend.

Bronze – David Paulse (Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club)
Fourth – Scotty Elliot (Beaconsfield Park Bowls Club)
Women’s Winner Gold – René van Niekerk (Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club)
Silver – Annelie Matthewson (Beaconsfield Park Bowls Club)
Bronze – Adri Koekemoer (Beaconsfield Park Bowls Club)
