Mosimane justifies Rivaldo gamble

Pitso 'Jingles' believes Coetzee will be worth every penny

BIG STEP: Rivaldo Coetzee, formerly of Ajax Cape Town has signed a five-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Pitso “Jingles” Mosimane doesn’t regret paying a hefty transfer fee to secure the services of Bafana defender Rivaldo Coetzee.

Mosimane referred to Coetzee as a ‘good investment’. The former Ajax Cape Town defender penned a five-year deal with Sundowns on Thursday.

The move happened a few days after his proposed transfer to Celtic in Scotland collapsed.

Coetzee (20) failed the medical but that didn’t stop Sundowns from signing him.

“When you have a 20-year-old playing for Bafana who can fit in your team what do you do? Football is a game of moments. If he is available you have to take the chance. I know that I will have five centrebacks. I’m aware. Do you want to lose the chance of signing him?” Mosimane raved about Coetzee.

“Brendon Rodgers speaks so well about the boy because he has been watching his games. You have to go for it. Of course you gare oing to pay a little bit more,” Mosimane said of Coetzee.

Coetzee will compete with the likes of Bangaly Soumahoro, Wayne Arendse, Modjeka Madisha, and Ricardo Nascimento who is still out injured.

“When we broke the bank and bought Khama Billiat (from Ajax Cape Town) it was news. I think we set the record (at that time). If I say today was it worth it? He has brought six cups here. You can say the money is too much if the guy didn’t play. For Barca to pay 5 million for Neymar was it worth it? Obviously yes,” Mosimane elaborated.

“For us to pay Ajax Cape Town X amount, was it worth it? Look what Billiat has contributed to us. Commercially it was a clever move because he was bought out of his release clause. He helped us to win the league and Telkom Knockout. That was brilliant.

“It was worth it,” Mosimane explained.

“Bongani Zungu, I found him at 20-years at Tuks and some people were saying we lost him for free. Don’t be greedy. Sometimes you must look at reality. He won two leagues, Nedbank Cup and the Telkom Knockout with me. Good move? Yes.”

As far as Coetzee’s situation is concerned, it was reported he will be out for nine months.

“His situation will be sorted. Our specialist said it doesn’t have to be like that. He will be soon be back. It won’t take nine months. I think three months maybe.

“Rivaldo is a good investment. You can’t compromise on age when there’s quality. We are willing to let Rivaldo go if Brendon wants to see him again,” Mosimane continued.

Mosimane claims he had done a lot of big deals before he even joined Sundowns.

“When I was at SuperSport United we paid R500 000 for Denis Masina. It took the whole budget. He came and he was unbelievable. He was 18 at that time. We sold him overseas after three years. It was worth it.

“I bought Teko Modise for
R600 000 at City Pillars in the National First Division. People were saying ‘how can you spend so much?’ I drove myself to make the deal.

“We paid R650 000 for Patrick Mayo from Bush Bucks. It was like paying R9 million at that time.

“They don’t all come right, but I’m just counting the ones that worked.”
