The Sol Plaatje Local Football Association (SPLFA) on Monday held a medals ceremony to honour its junior athletes from the boys and girls football teams who had excelled at the previous week’s Inter-LFA Championship which was held in Cape Town.

LFA chairperson, Seabata Makhele, confirmed that all five junior teams from the Sol Plaatje region had made the trip to and from the Cape safely.

Last week the LFA undertook the annual pilgrimage to the Cape as a member of five associations making up the self-funded Inter-LFA Championship, consisting of two members each from the Western and Eastern Capes and the SPLFA.

Among those honoured this week by the association is the Under-18 team captain Jemoniva Kock who was selected to play in the Inter-LFA’s elite squad which will shortly showcase the talents of those selected in a custom made tournament which will be hosted at an as yet undisclosed date.

“Jemoniva Kock led the Under-18 team which had reached remarkable success at the tournament in the Cape and narrowly missed out on winning the Iter-LFA finals. Our Under-12 A and B sides each played three games, lost two and won one.

“The Under-14 squad lost all four of its competitive games while the Under-16 team drew two matches and lost another two. The Under-18s performed best (losing) out in the semi-finals to eventual winners from the Northern Areas (Eastern Cape).

“Other than that everything went well,” said Makhele.

Makhele extended the association’s gratitude to several of its sponsors, these include: the office of the Premier, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, entrepreneurs and private donors including Nelson Mosiapoa, Ofentse Mokae, Papi Maniza, Keipoletse Funeral Parlour, MECs of Health and of Safety and Liaison, Monyangan Security and many others.

In a related development, the LFA affiliated junior girl’s football side, Norman FC who had taken part in another junior football development tournament which was staged simultaneously last week in Gauteng – the FNB Youth football tournament, returned home with accolades heaped on its player Leonay Kock for being awarded the “Golden Boot” for scoring seven goals in the tournament.

Team manager Sydney Norman said, “We extend a big congratulations to Leonay Kok for a big achievement in the FNB Youth Championships in Johannesburg. We thank LFA coaches Wendy August and Spakes Matile.

“This was the first time she was selected into an elite team in her career.”
