Two KGC players, Mikah Poonawassy and Joanie Herselman, qualified for a trip to Sun City and the 2018 Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals by winning the regional finals played at the Sishen Golf Club on Saturday.
Meanwhile, back at the Kimberley Golf Club, Saturday saw the presentation of the Bob Klemp Shield to the 2018 KGC Individual Matchplay Champion. The final match had the 2018 Strokeplay champion, Basil Hilton Nortjé, take on Andries Kori, twice a previous winner of the Matchplay Championships. Both had, in their youth, honed their skills at the Koffiefontein GC.
Old adversaries and current Northern Cape Golf Union teammates the challenge elicited extraordinary local interest. After 17 holes it was Andries Kori who prevailed, two up – one to play, and for the third time received the trophy that bears the names of the leading KGC golfers since 1974.
Home advantage did not count on Saturday. Visiting Westlake GC member, Mo Suliman, posted 43 individual stableford points to edge out Sishen GC’s Daan Fourie, the runner-up on 42 points. Gavin Oliver was third on 38 points in a count-out from the final prize winner Ronnie Engelbrecht.
Mikah Poonawassy carded a gross 39 to post a winning 21 points in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner. Ronnie Engelbrecht was the runner-up on 20 points. Three players followed on 19 points – Gavin Oliver, Donald Whitebooi and Gladys Poonawassy.
The icy cold weather and the intermittent drizzle did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the Women’s Section Golf fund-raiser held on Thursday to celebrate National Women’s Day. A betterball played from a scramble drive Barend Burger and Henk Visser returned 51 points to take top spot.
Ronnie Engelbrecht and Kariem Anderson were the runners-up on 50 points. Two betterballs returned 49 points – Mikah Poonawassy and Tenderson Manyetsa and Christarrico Gordon and Grant Truter. Three betterballs followed on 48 points – Sandra Nel and Dalina Schoeman, Shane Arthur and Andries Kori and Peter and Peter Michael Salo.
In all the prizes went to the 19 scores.
Harry Welham and Angelo Rodrigeus returned 48 betterball points to comfortably win the Wednesday Konica Minolta team prize. Barend Burger and Gavin Schafer were second on 43 points, with Adrian McLaren and Stephan Le Roux were third on 42 points.
In the individual section it was Harry Welham first on 40 points. Alan Doherty was second in a count-out from third placed Barend Burger. Both players returned 37 points.
