In a momentous achievement for local sport, Diamond Ladies FC and men’s team Galeshewe Stars Football Club ventured to Upington to represent the Sol Plaatje Local Football Association (LFA) and Frances Baard District in the Provincial Engen Tournament play-offs.
Following the play-offs, both clubs secured their places in the national tournament, set to be held from September 27 to 29, at WITS Marks Park in Johannesburg.
This milestone marks the first time any Kimberley clubs have advanced to the national stage since the Engen Tournament’s expansion to six other provinces. The players and supporters alike are brimming with pride and anticipation for the upcoming competition.
Coach Jack Junior of Diamond Ladies expressed his excitement and optimism for the national tournament.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our players to gain exposure and experience. We are hopeful that bigger club scouts will notice their talent,” said Junior. “We owe a great deal of gratitude to our LFA executives for their unwavering support. Their backing has been instrumental since we began qualifying from the LFA knockout stage, and we look forward to continuing this partnership to foster football growth in our province.”
The national tournament promises to be a platform for showcasing the skills and dedication of both Kimberley clubs. As they prepare to compete at WITS Marks Park, the community rallies behind them, eager to witness their continued success and to support the players in this historic milestone for local football.
