This weekend two groups set off for championship tournaments further afield. The NC provincial team heads to Potchefstroom Golf Club, where the annual Country Districts IPT will be held, this includes KGC members Deon Kruis, Nico Jacobs, Basil Nortjé, Andries Kori and Geoffrey van der Merwe.
Meanwhile, the Senior Women are off to the Women’s Senior Golf Championships at St. Francis Links. This includes KGC members Gladys Poonawassy, Christelle Groenewald and Noreen-Anne Crozier.
Back home, the top shot of the week belonged to Johan Herselman, a well-judged seven iron into the hole on the par three 14th for a mostly elusive “hole-on-one”.
On Saturday Donald Whitebooi posted an extraordinary net 63 for 45 individual stableford points and a convincing win in the annual Stepping Stones Pre-Primary School Golf Fund-raiser. Bernie Turton was the runner-up on 41 points. Cedric van der Ross and Ramon Barlow were third and fourth, each on 40 points. Jan van Vuuren and Dries Mostert were fifth and sixth, each on 39 points. A three-way count-out deemed Alisdair McKenzie the final prizewinner.
Twenty-one points was the top score in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner. The count-out deemed Bernie Turton first and Peter Jansen second. Three players followed on 19 points; Wayne Jampies, Deuce Leburu and Victor Motaung.
Herbie Woodbridge (25), Luchmen Poonawassy (24) and Ant Crozier (24) were the best three players in a high scoring Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. Each of the prizewinners returned two powerplays on the day. Further big sixes were scored by Kevin Wakeford, Liam Abrahams, Tenderson Manyetsa, Dave Benade, Machiel Cronjé and Nico Ross.
In the Wednesday Konica Minolta Business League May outing, the betterball stableford team scores had Gavin Schafer and Conrad de Beer first on 47 points, Lennie Allen and John Lankester second on 46 points and Neil Steyn and Gerhard Kruger third on 45 points.
The prizewinners in the individual section were Gavin Schafer on 38, John Lankester on 36 and Dries du Plessis on 35.
The Coming Week
On Wednesday it is the Leon’s House of Liquor IPS, followed on Thursday with the KWV Powerplay Niner and on Friday it is time once again for the Sun Flamingo Niner. This will be followed by the snowball draw that has survived another week to peak at R4 550.
On Saturday it is the annual Standard Bank Sol Plaatje University Chancellors Golf Day, put together with extraordinary effort. The format is a betterball stableford. It is also the Seniors outing. The following day, Sunday, the Seniors travel to Bloemfontein to defend the Blacklaws Trophy.
